Musulmans au Monastère de Saint-Georges - Lieux saints partagés (2015)

Ethnographic documentary

Direction : Manoël Pénicaud
Production : Mucem / Idemec
Length : 4 minutes 40
Language : French

Saint George is one of the figures who has ledto most cross-fertilisations between Christians and Muslims in the eastern Mediterranean. Off the coast of Istanbul, on the summit of the island of Büyükada, is the Greek Orthodox monastery of Saint George. Celebrations of the saint’s feast day on 23 April draw as many as 100,000 people, many of them Muslims. Most of them come to make wishes, which take various ritual forms. Aya Yorgi is popular because he is reputed to be efficacious and makes no distinction between Christians and Muslims.

This documentary has been made for the exhibition Lieux saints partagés at the Musée des civilisations de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée (Mucem) in Marseille, april-august 2015.
